Just out of curiosity, but what difference would it make if it was a homework question?
Not him, but I think a homework question would probably ask for the most common and "correct" answer (aka. the "textbook" answer), whereas if he was asking out of interest (as he seems to be) or if he wanted to perform the reaction in real life, then there might be a bit more leeway to attempt a more practical approach (i.e. something that you might not find in an introductory textbook, for example).
